About the Artist
Gilbert Mpakule is a Malawian Conceptual Visual artist and educator. He is currently President of the Visual Arts Association of Malawi (VAAM). He is celebrated for his captivating and thought provoking works that explore life and human experiences, landscapes, abstracts, birds, nature and the oral tradition of Malawian mythology. For this year’s Art in the Park, he has created haunting pieces of different styles, by blending elements of realism to explore: 1. Natural places and our cultural heritage 2. Tension between nature and humanity 3. Environmental degradation and poverty. Mpakule uses both oil paint and acrylics, pushing boundaries. He has worked for Murals Art Project at Queens Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre, combining Science and Art. He has exhibited at several art exhibitions in Malawi, Germany, Canada and China.
